While profitability is essential, it doesn’t guarantee long-term success. Some companies that rest on their margins will lose ground as competition intensifies — as Jeff Bezos said, “Your margin is my opportunity”.
ON Semiconductor (ON) makes power and sensing chips for cars, industrial equipment and AI data centers. The stock trades at about 27.6 times trailing adjusted earnings, meaning normalized net income with stock-based compensation added back. That basis is meant to sit closer to the one analysts use in their forecasts than GAAP earnings would, though the two are not defined identically. At that multiple the stock looks expensive. But the trailing year was weak, and the weakness is fading.
Qualcomm just sealed a renewed patent deal with Apple, and the market moved fast. Whether this resets the ceiling for QCOM shares or simply buys time before a bigger reckoning depends on what replaces billions in revenue that could vanish by fiscal 2027.
The speciality foundry JV between VIS and NXP completed construction in 22 months and expects volume production in early 2027.

The question now is whether the current US$230.16 price tag lines up with those cash flows when you run the numbers through a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) lens. A 28.8% return over 5 years means long term holders have already captured meaningful value. Any new position rests heavily on what the underlying cash flows can support from...
ON Semiconductor (ON) and Micron Technology (MU) are owned for the same reason. AI data centers need more silicon than the industry can make, and both sell into that shortage. The resemblance stops there. Micron has signed part of its peak pricing into multiyear contracts. ON Semiconductor is climbing out of a trough, still rationing parts between its AI customers and its car customers. Same shortage, opposite ends of a cycle.
MACOM Technology Solutions stock has more than doubled over the past year. BMO is the latest Wall Street firm to turn bullish on the chip maker.
ON Semiconductor shed nearly half its value in three months while its peers barely flinched, yet one Wall Street analyst just doubled down with the most aggressive price target on the Street. The disconnect between the selloff and the operating data raises a question worth asking.
