The Australian miner plans to lift output to two million tonnes a year as lithium prices fall and the WA government backs the project.
PLS Group plans to spend $1.9 billion expanding its Pilgangoora lithium mine in Western Australia, targeting annual production of about two million tonnes of spodumene concentrate by 2029.
The project includes a new processing facility. PLS also announced a separate $600 million infrastructure investment over three years, covering access roads, a 1,200-bed workers’ village and a mine services facility.
The expansion comes as lithium prices fall. Mining analyst Peter Strachan said spodumene concentrate prices had dropped from $US3,000 per tonne in May to $US1,505, as supply returned to the market.
The WA government said the project is expected to create 1,000 construction jobs and 500 ongoing operational roles.
