BWXT Wins $4 Million Y-12 Design Contract, With Construction Still Ahead

The four-month design award puts BWXT in the running for a later construction deal, but NNSA has not picked a builder.

BWX Technologies won a four-month, $4 million contract to design a module for a new lithium processing facility at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee. The award starts a multi-stage competition, not construction work.

The National Nuclear Security Administration selected two teams to develop concepts for the facility’s Machining and Inspection Module. BWXT is working with Edgewater Technical Associates, Evans General Contractors, Process Engineering Associates and Merrick & Co., the company said.

NNSA will assess both designs during the first phase. After the second phase of design work, the agency plans to choose one team and begin negotiations for a construction contract.

That sequence leaves BWXT in contention, but does not guarantee it will build the module. The agency has not disclosed the expected value or timing of a construction award.

The proposed facility is intended to modernize lithium processing now carried out in aging facilities. NNSA says the work supports capabilities including purification, direct reuse, component production and material salvage.

The $4 million award is small beside BWXT’s broader business. The company reported $901.6 million in revenue for the second quarter of 2026, making the design contract a potential foothold rather than a near-term financial driver.

The next milestones are completion of the competing designs and NNSA’s selection for construction talks. BWXT said any additional facility modules would be designed and built under separate contracts, creating further competitions beyond this first module.
