The 25-year extension preserves Cboe’s exclusive SPX options license and opens the door to joint work on tokenized contracts.
Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have extended their exclusive licensing agreement by 25 years, through 2051. The deal keeps Cboe’s exclusive rights to offer trading in S&P 500 Index options, known as SPX options.
The companies may also work together on products beyond traditional index derivatives, including tokenized options contracts. Cboe CEO Craig Donohue said the extension gives the company room to grow its SPX and VIX offerings and pursue new products.
The partnership began in 1983 with the launch of SPX options. The contract recorded 970.6 million in annual volume in 2025, while average daily volume reached 3.9 million, up 25% from the prior year, according to the announcement.
Cboe said it has expanded its SPX options suite with new products, structures and expiration dates. It also operates a related VIX options and futures franchise.
