Novo Drops Nordisk Name as Obesity Fight Enters New Phase

The Danish drugmaker is pairing a consumer-facing rebrand with a culture reset as Eli Lilly widens its lead in obesity medicines.

A shorter name will not repair a longer list of problems. Novo Nordisk is betting that “Novo” can make the company easier to recognize as it tries to regain momentum in the obesity-drug market, where Eli Lilly has turned an early disadvantage into a growing commercial lead.

The Danish drugmaker said Monday that Novo will become its day-to-day name, while Novo Nordisk A/S remains the company’s legal identity. The new slogan, “Lasting Health Starts Now,” will sit alongside an updated version of the company’s Apis bull logo. Executives also introduced “The Novo Way,” a culture framework built around customer focus, competitiveness, clarity, and care and integrity.

The timing makes the exercise more than a cosmetic refresh. Novo’s Wegovy and Ozempic franchises helped create the modern GLP-1 market, but Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound have reshaped the competitive landscape, putting pressure on Novo’s market share, pricing power, and pipeline. Reuters reported that Novo’s Copenhagen-listed shares were down nearly 15% in 2026 as of Monday, even though its oral GLP-1 treatment was running ahead of Lilly’s on U.S. prescriptions by hundreds of thousands per week, according to IQVIA data cited by an analyst.

The company also needs investors to look beyond the logo. Novo scrapped two late-stage trials for its experimental cardiovascular drug ziltivekimab last week, adding to concerns about whether its next generation of medicines can offset intensifying competition. The rebrand’s emphasis on speed and consumer relevance suggests management wants to compete not only through clinical results, but also through access, convenience, marketing, and closer relationships with patients.

That argument will face its first major test on September 21, when Novo is scheduled to hold a Capital Markets Day in London and lay out its updated business strategy. Investors will be looking for decisions on research priorities, oral medicines, pricing, and commercial execution. “Novo” may be simpler. The turnaround will not be.
