Pal’s Sudden Service Wins Workplace Certification During 70th Year

The regional chain surveyed more than 1,400 workers as it expands training and prepares new locations across two states.

For a restaurant chain built around speed, Pal’s Sudden Service is putting its employee experience under the microscope. The Kingsport, Tennessee-based operator has earned Great Place To Work Certification for 2026-2027 after surveying more than 1,400 team members, according to the certification organization and the company.

The designation arrives as Pal’s marks its 70th anniversary and operates more than 30 locations across northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. Great Place To Work’s certification process relies on employee responses through its Trust Index survey, rather than management’s own assessment of workplace culture. The organization says 91% of Pal’s employees describe the company as a great place to work, compared with 57% at a typical U.S. company.

That result matters in a labor-intensive business where service consistency depends on what happens behind the counter as much as what reaches the drive-through window. Pal’s has long treated training as an operating system, not a one-time orientation. New employees receive instruction on listening, food safety, service procedures and workplace culture, while managers use one-on-one coaching and repeated evaluations before workers are certified at a station, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s account of the company’s quality program.

President Adam Crosby said the company uses the Baldrige framework, the performance model connected to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, to benchmark its systems and improve team skills. Pal’s became the first restaurant company to win that award in 2001 and has also received the Tennessee Quality Award twice, the company said.

The workplace recognition also fits a business model that has resisted rapid national expansion. Pal’s keeps its footprint concentrated in the Appalachian region, with 31 locations listed as of August 2026, while maintaining a face-to-face ordering model and a tightly standardized menu. Its careers site describes each restaurant as operating under the direct guidance of an owner-operator, with cross-trained crews responsible for food quality, cleanliness and hospitality.

For Pal’s, the certification is less a branding trophy than a recruitment tool. In a sector competing for hourly workers, the company is presenting structured training, advancement and local management as part of the product.
