Strategy Adds 950 Bitcoin as MSTR Climbs 40% in a Month

Strategy bought $75.7 million of Bitcoin using cash reserves, while its shares tracked the cryptocurrency’s sharp late-summer rebound.

Strategy bought 950 bitcoin for $75.7 million in the week ended September 20, bringing its holdings to 846,000 BTC. Its shares, traded as MSTR, closed at $167.33 on September 22, up about 40% from their August 21 close. The purchase details came in a company filing.

The company paid an average of $79,670 per coin, including fees. It used cash reserves, not new share sales, for the purchase, according to the filing.

Bitcoin had climbed to around $86,000 by September 22, lifting the value of Strategy’s large holdings. The stock also jumped 9.5% on September 21, the day the company disclosed the purchase.

The buying came alongside another use of cash: Strategy repurchased $174 million of its preferred shares, called STRC. It reported $1.05 billion in general-purpose cash and a separate $5.04 billion reserve for preferred dividends and debt interest as of September 20.

Those cash balances matter because Strategy’s Bitcoin plan relies on both its holdings and its ability to meet financial obligations. The latest purchase followed an August acquisition of 4,603 coins, after the company had sold Bitcoin earlier in 2026 to help pay preferred dividends.

MSTR’s rally also comes with substantial exposure to Bitcoin’s swings. In the quarter ended June 30, Strategy reported $8.32 billion in unrealized losses on digital assets, against revenue of $122.4 million. Those losses reflected the period’s Bitcoin price decline.

Investors will be watching whether Bitcoin stays near recent highs and whether Strategy resumes purchases in the coming weeks. The company said it made no sales of MSTR shares under its at-the-market program during the latest purchase period.
