BYD’s Overseas Revenue Pushes It Beyond Exports

Overseas sales are now central to BYD’s business, as factories and a European truck launch deepen its global ambitions.

BYD generated 53% of its revenue outside China in the first half of 2026, a milestone that shows how quickly its business is shifting overseas. The Chinese automaker is pairing exports with factories and plans for local production in key markets.

Overseas revenue reached 181.3 billion yuan, up 34% from a year earlier, while revenue in China fell 31%, according to BYD’s interim results. Overseas vehicle sales rose about 71% to 792,256 in the same period, as a fierce price war weighed on its home market.

The shift is visible in Brazil, BYD’s largest market outside China. Its factory there recently passed 100,000 locally produced electrified vehicles, giving the company a foothold to tailor products and supply closer to regional buyers.

In Europe, BYD is moving toward production at its first passenger-car plant in Hungary. Local assembly can shorten supply chains and help the company navigate trade barriers, but it also means building and staffing operations before sales volumes are guaranteed.

The push now reaches beyond passenger cars. BYD unveiled a heavy-duty electric truck for Europe in September and plans to launch it in 2027; executives have also said the company ultimately wants to manufacture trucks locally.

That broader offer matters because truck buyers need more than a vehicle. BYD is pitching charging, financing, maintenance and roadside support alongside its commercial models, an effort to build lasting ties with fleet operators.

The financial test is whether the added footprint earns its cost. BYD’s first-half net profit fell 20.5% even as international revenue grew, so investors will watch factory output, overseas margins and whether local operations turn growth into sustained returns.
