Vicor’s AI Power License Sparked Rally Before Guidance Raise

Shares climbed after Vicor disclosed a new AI hardware license, days before royalties from the deal doubled its quarterly growth forecast.

Vicor shares gained 21.2% in the week through September 21, before the company raised its third-quarter outlook after the market closed that Monday. The earlier catalyst was a licensing deal that investors saw as a potential source of new revenue.

On September 16, Vicor announced a non-exclusive license for an unnamed AI hardware maker to procure modules covered by Vicor’s Vertical Power Delivery patents from other suppliers. The company’s technology delivers power to high-performance computing and network processors.

The announcement arrived after trading ended. The next session, September 17, Vicor stock rose 17.7% to close at $216.39, according to Zacks. That move came before Vicor disclosed how the license would affect its near-term forecast.

The financial effect became clearer on September 21. Vicor raised its forecast for sequential third-quarter revenue growth to more than 20%, from nearly 10%, citing royalties from the new license. Sequential growth compares revenue with the previous quarter.

That timing helps explain why the stock moved before the outlook changed: investors reacted first to the license announcement, then received confirmation that it would contribute royalties this quarter. Vicor said four companies among OEMs and hyperscalers had secured licenses to its power technology.

The agreement is non-exclusive, so the licensee can buy covered modules from suppliers other than Vicor. That gives the company a way to earn royalties even when it does not manufacture every module used by a customer. The company did not disclose the license’s financial terms.

Investors are also weighing whether Vicor can make enough products to meet demand. On September 11, the company said it was purchasing two New Hampshire sites for planned fabs, and that its existing factory was nearing capacity. Vicor said the new facilities are intended to expand production for AI customers.
